Grace ~ More than a Chant

Grace is a way of living. Not a quick memorized chant before you eat. ~unknown

When I was growing up we held hands to say grace. Every night.

That is every night AT HOME.

I don’t recall saying grace at a restaurant. I don’t believe it was because my parents were embarrassed or something to that effect, it was just not part of our family culture.

I have great memories of all of us around the family dinner table as we said the same grace every night…

“God is Great, God is Good;
Let us thank Him for our food.
By His hands we all are fed,
Give us Lord our Daily Bread. Amen

I must have said this grace at least 4500 times.

So what is “grace”…it is saying a blessing, thanking God for the food.

Why do we say grace or bless our food?

Jesus Christ gave us the example and by saying grace as Christians we are modeling His behavior.

When Christ fed 4,000 people with just seven loaves of bread and a few fish, what did He do first… He gave thanks…THEN he gave the food to the disciples and people. (from Matthew 15:32-38)

We are to give thanks.

Now a days grace at our house is more than just “God is good…” In fact my husband sometimes says we need to heat up the food in the microwave after I’m done with my “sermonette!”

Is my way better than my parent’s way of giving thanks?

I used to think so.

But now I realize they weren’t just chanting words…it was their way of giving thanks… talking to God…it was never just hollow words…it was from their heart.

And that is what I believe God wants; for us to thank Him…sincerely.

I was thinking about this tonight and thought of my talks with my earthly father before he died. We would play cribbage and he would ALWAYS say, “The master is going to win.” My response was, “No the master’s daughter is going to win.”

We would banter back and forth…always the same conversations, but never boring. I loved him and he loved me. There was something comforting about that conversation.

And so it is with God. Our prayers do not have to be some theological wonder…they need to be from the heart.

Just be yourself…talk to Him.

Together let’s all tell Him, “God is good, God is great, let us thank Him for _________.” YOU fill in the blank. Tell Him what you are thankful for today.

I’m thanking you, God, from a full heart,
 I’m writing the book on your wonders.
I’m whistling, laughing, and jumping for joy;
 I’m singing your song, High God. (Psalm 9 1-2 MSG)

So whistle, laugh, jump, do a cartwheel or a flip…or simply smile and talk with your heavenly Father…

He’s waiting…start the bantering!

Listen to Him as He tells you that He is going to win AND if you trust in Him, so are you…through Christ!

It’s more than bantering…it’s the TRUTH!

Blessings, Susan
