God’s Word is NOT a Mere Suggestion
Last week I worked in downtown Manhattan.
At first I was obedient and crossed the various streets when the crosswalk sign indicated it was a “Go”.
HOWEVER…soon I was like every other New Yorker.
I realized these signs were apparently just a mere suggestion..one really doesn’t need to wait for the “walking” icon.
So what if the red hand is flashing and the mechanical voice is telling you not to walk?!
The NYC way is to just keep talking on your cell phone, step out into traffic and assume the cars will stop…and amazingly enough I did not witness anyone being struck. Of course I did witness a lot of honking and yelling.
Unfortunately there are consequences for not following these signs. Thousands are injured every year by a car, taxi, truck or bus…and this year they expect there to be around 200 fatalities. With that in mind, one would think people would pay attention to the crosswalk signs and carefully cross the street.
AND…one would think I would have followed the signs. But like many of the other pedestrians, I did not think the rules applied to me.
That is how many of us treat God’s Word…as a mere suggestion. Something we can follow or not.
BUT THE BIBLE IS NOT A SUGGESTION!!
God expects us to be obedient and follow His Word.
On Sunday my good friend led her Small Group at church. The main focus was the Scripture from Galatians 6:2…
Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
God is instructing us not to just focus inward at our own difficulties, but to look outward and help others.
One of my dear work buddies took my last assigned day on a project in California last month, which made it possible for me to get home a day early. A small act of kindness, but greatly appreciated.
Another friend stopped what she was doing and took her friend to the doctor on Friday.
My long time friend is coming over Wednesday to help me learn some new material.
What acts of kindness have you done recently?
Bear each other’s burdens…it is not a mere suggestion.
