We just returned from a trip to Letchworth New York State Park. As we hiked through the woods, we came across downed trees. Their trunks were broken and exposed. Dead wood…or so it seemed.
But as we looked closer we saw vegetation growing out of some, even growing out of the knotted roots, and bugs and such crawling in and out of the hollowed out wood.
This is actually a crucial part of the forest system. Downed trunks provide moisture and nutrients to the ground, food for a diverse list of organisms and homes for a variety of animals.
Out of brokenness comes new life. This is true for the forest and for our lives.
Over the years I have had my share of heartache and brokenness. At times I have called out to God during those tough times. In other instances, I was so distressed that it was my friends that called out for me to our Father and asked Him to carry me through.
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:18
Is your heart broken? Draw near to The Lord. Allow Him to create new growth in your life.
Isaiah 57:15 tells us that God lives in the high and Holy places, but that for those of us that are low-spirited and have a crushed spirit, that He will put a new spirit in us and get us up and on our feet again.
So let God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him scamper. Say a quiet yes to God and he’ll be there in no time. Quit dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field. Hit bottom, and cry your eyes out. The fun and games are over. Get serious, really serious. Get down on your knees before the Master; it’s the only way you’ll get on your feet. James 4:7-10 (MSG)
