Golf, bagpipes, and heaven

20130724-121535.jpgPhil Mickelson won the 142nd British Open golf match last weekend at Muirfield in Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland.

What a beautiful country! Hopefully one day we will be able to visit there.

As we watched the match on TV, I loved hearing the various Scottish commentators with their wonderful accents. 20130724-122230.jpgIn between play they showed the country-side, the villages and their stonewalled buildings, and all the while the Great Highland Bagpipes played in the background. Oh how it made me feel like I was there!

The music was what really transported me. It’s amazing how music affects our souls.

Praise music carries me to a place where I feel as if I am at the feet of our Lord.

The Bible tells us we will be singing praises to God in heaven. Now I like to sing just as much as the next person, but I really have a hard time fathoming singing for eternity. Don’t get me wrong, I am looking forward to heaven, but I am having a hard time understanding singing and singing alone. Can someone help me with this concept?

Will heaven be boring? It certainly sounds like it!!

Obviously I am saying this with tongue-in-cheek, but truth be told, many of us have had these thoughts.

So what will be going on up there? What will it look like? The Bible does not answer all these questions, but it does tell us some things about what heaven will be like…so let’s look at a couple of things about heaven.

First it will be like a Park or a Garden, not just floating on clouds.20130724-123217.jpg

When Christ was crucified there were two criminals next to Him. One of the criminals that hung on the hill acknowledged who He was, the Messiah.

The criminal said to Jesus: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”

Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” Luke 23:42-43 (NIV)

Paradise: παράδεισος in the Greek means PARK, a GARDEN…like the Garden of Eden! Revelation 2:7 uses the same term, describing heaven as the “Paradise of God”…thus the ‘Park of God’!!

Now that sounds great.

Additionally we will have new bodies.

And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man, so shall we bear the image of the heavenly man. (Jesus) 1 Corinthians 15:49 (NIV)

So we will not have the limitations our earthly bodies have AND No More Pain, No More Disease!! Now that sounds good!

He’ll wipe every tear from their eyes. Death is gone for good—tears gone, crying gone, pain gone—all the first order of things gone. Revelation 21:4 (MSG)

Imagine, no more illness! No need to go to the doctor, no need for meds, no cancer, no radiation therapy!! Yes, this is sounding good, but what about all the singing?

I’ll get to the singing later.

Well besides singing there will be work to do. Uh oh…work?

…And his servants will serve Him. Revelation 22:3 (NIV)

We will be serving God. We won’t become tired and weary doing this.

Jesus will be serving us!

Truly I tell you, He will dress Himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them. Luke 12:37b

This is starting to sound like a resort…

And even better there will be no sin.

Nothing dirty or defiled will get into the City. Revelation 21:27a (MSG)

That means no more struggles of the flesh, no more guilt, never to have to apologize, no more brokenness.

Revelation 5:8-11 does say we will be singing around the throne, praising God., but just like any Scripture, we need to look at the Bible in its entirety.

Heaven will be a place of beauty, great joy and happiness…of course I have just touched the iceberg of what heaven will be like…my goal was to give you hope. Did I?

Are you heaven bound? That is the real question. The Bible tells us that sin separates us from God, but that Christ died to take away that sin. Click here if you would like to know more about having a relationship with Christ.

Blessings, Susan
