Their faith was important to them; so much so they left friends and family behind. 102 men, women, and children cramped below deck huddled together with no comforts…no beds, no refrigeration, high seas, hardships beyond imagination.
A tough journey for the courageous people on the Mayflower in 1620. Governor William Bradford was among those brave souls.
166 years later a young man was born to a pioneer family in Tennessee. He grew up to be a mountain man, congressman, and died a hero defending the Alamo. Davy Crockett was a folk hero.
Two great Americans. (Okay, Bradford technically was not an American!)
Two very, very different people.
Two of my relatives.
Bradford – Politician, deeply religious, a Puritan
Crockett – Politician, frontiersman, possibly a philanderer
“So they committed themselves to the will of God, and resolved to proceed.” (William Bradford)
“Throughout the day no time for memorandums now. Go ahead! Liberty and independence forever.” (Davy Crockett)
Other relatives of ours include whalers, fishermen, prisoners of war, investors, educators, artists, craftsmen, miliatry men, nurses, doctors, lawyers, southerners, northerners, conservatives, liberals….a hodgepodge, conglomeration of people!
This is America. A nation whose government I do not always agree with, but a nation I am proud to say is my country.
People need to be governed. Down through the ages we see people groups establishing some form of governance.
Today we celebrate our country’s independence. We celebrate the governance that was establish 237 years ago.
In between the hot dogs, fireworks, BBQ’d chicken, family fun…take time to pray for our nation…and our leaders.
I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. 1 Timothy 2:1-2 (MSG)
Happy Birthday America! Happy 4th of July, dear friends! Happy Independence Day!
