Out of the Darkness

My heart pounded with each step. The stairway seemed to go forever.

“How did I get myself into this predicament?” I asked myself.

Fear gripped my soul. My hands started to sweat. There was no turning back.

The guard barely said a word. Most of those before me just heeded his arm gestures. Sometimes he blew his whistle…then everyone stopped and paid attention.

Adrenaline was racing through my blood stream when he pointed at me. It was my turn to go into the darkness…the other guard had signaled so.

“I’ve never done this,” I said with a quivering voice.

“Take off your glasses. Hold onto the handles,” the guard said.

And then I was plunged into darkness. I couldn’t even see my hand in front of my face. All I could hear were my own screams echoing in my ears. Cold water was sprayed onto my face.

Twisting and turning.

Then suddenly there was light…

With a splash I landed in the cool pool of water…I had survived The Cavern…the water park’s winding tunnel of darkness. The lifeguard smiled as I swam to the water’s edge.

That really was fun. What we will do for our grandchildren!! I wondered why I had been so fearful.

But isn’t life like that sometimes? We plunge into something new…we only see darkness…we don’t know what is on the other side…and then at the end of the tunnel God provides a cool pool of His glory. We may have had to experience a series of twists and turns along the way, but it was well worth it.

I know that when life hurls me into the unknown, the Lord will keep me safe.

For God said…“Be still, and know that I am God” Psalm 46:10

Oh how reassuring!!

No matter what I face, He will sustain me. Unfortunately, many times I forget this and I am shaken, fearful of the journey.

There are times that I must be reminded that God will sustain me through the storms of life.

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
Psalm 121:1-2 (NIV)

And when I fail to put my hope in Him, my friends encourage me; God is your refuge and shield; put your hope in His Word.

So if your life is a series of twists and turns today, if you are in the middle of darkness or it looks like a storm is ahead…reach out to The Lord.

Call on His name in your distress. He will always answer.

Blessings, Susan

  1. I think I was already committed going down a high, fast water slide when I asked the same question you did, Susan … and me a dignified grandmother! I totally relate to your story, and love that “God provides a cool pool of His glory” at the end of our dark tunnel experiences. Thanks for the laugh and the inspiration!
