Crab Rangoon

I ordered Crab Rangoon as an appetizer last night.

What kind of name is that? Crab Rangoon.

While I waited for my food to be delivered, I had to look up the history of this appetizer.

I discovered that Yangon, also called Rangoon, was the capital of independent Myanmar (Burma) from 1948 to 2006. Yangon means end of strife. Okay…so before I knew it I was reading about Burma. I learned Myanmar became an independent state in 1948, after 62 years of colonial rule and was the last country that the British occupied in this region.

I am embarrassed to say that I wasn’t exactly sure where on the world map they were located. Map of Burma

I seriously doubt crab rangoon is served in Myanmar. In fact rumor has it they were first served at Trader Vic’s in the 1950’s. Others say they came on the scene 50 years earlier at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, Missouri.

These deep-fried wonton wrappers are stuffed with a combination of cream cheese, flaked crab meat, and seasonings  and are rather yummy. For those with a creative streak, the folding of the wrappers can become a clever origami design.

Additionally I discovered there is actually a Crab Rangoon Appreciation Page on Facebook!! Can you believe that? And over 8,000 Youtube hits for Crab Rangoon!

I also love Green Curry Chicken…I wondered if there is a FB page for that? Lo and behold I checked and guess what? There is!! I think there is a FB page for just about any topic. More importantly, there are numerous ones pointing people to Christ. Now that’s what I’m talking about.

Seriously though, who really cares how crab rangoon got its name? Well for some reason I did for part of the afternoon. Rather than searching the web for the history of an Asian appetizer, my time would be better served developing a closer relationship with Christ.

With all of this in mind, I realized…you guessed it…I was wasting my time and not really being productive. Searching for Scriptures about wasting your time revealed God has a lot to say about being a sluggard. WOW! This one hit me right between the eyes.

Don’t waste your time on useless work, mere busywork, the barren pursuits of darkness. Expose these things for the sham they are. It’s a scandal when people waste their lives on things they must do in the darkness where no one will see. Rip the cover off those frauds and see how attractive they look in the light of Christ.

Wake up from your sleep,
Climb out of your coffins;
Christ will show you the light!
So watch your step. Use your head. Make the most of every chance you get. These are desperate times!

Don’t live carelessly, unthinkingly. Make sure you understand what the Master wants. Ephesians 5:16-17 (MSG)

Hmm…this was surely written just for me. Oh, I know it was not written just for me, but it sure felt like it.

It was though God was reaching down from the sky, telling me to “Put the Laptop Away” and “Get busy with my work.”

So on that note, closing laptop…talk to you tomorrow.

Blessings, Susan
